It is an enthralling tale of an abandoned village, known for its haunting stories and tragic history. My uncle who just came from a family trip from Rajasthan visited me with lots of gifts and stories from the trip. He shared a lot of photos that he had clicked during his visit, while going through his camera roll I came across a photo of some broken houses and dismantled structures which I found odd because amongst a lot of beautiful architecture why would he choose to click a picture of fragmented structure so I asked him about the same and he told me about the story of Abandoned Village of Jaisalmer namely KULDHARA. The story instantly grabbed my attention. I decided to know the secret of the mystery.

Wait, I can see you all thinking, “Why are we here? And Why have I made you wait to tell the story of Kuldhara? What is so mysterious about the village that grabbed my attention?’’ Without further ado, let’s dive straight into the story.

CURSED FATE OF KULDHARA

Kuldhara is a village situated in the Jaisalmer District of Rajasthan, once said to be a prosperous one but now referred to as an abandoned one. It was established around the 13th Century and inhabited by Pali Brahmins. The people who originally settled in the village were the Brahmins who moved from the Pali region to Jaisalmer and hence were referred to as Pali Brahmins. They were known for agricultural knowledge and wisdom which contributed to making the village prosperous. Kuldhara’s fertile land and strategic location came as an added advantage for Pali Brahmins. Kuldhara’s peaceful and settled life was disturbed after the arrival of then Diwan of Jaisalmer Salim Singh, who was cruel, and evil and had a bad reputation for being a womanizer. When Salim Singh reached the quiet and prosperous village he was attracted by the village chief’s beautiful daughter and demanded to marry her and threatened to levy heavy taxes on the village if his demand was not fulfilled. With the deadline set by Salim Singh approaching, the villagers were horrified as they were well aware of the repercussions of failing to do as demanded by Singh. However, the Village Chieftain was adamant about protecting the honor of her daughter and the village hence he came up with the idea of leaving the town along with all the villagers overnight. They all with whatever possible things they could carry with them vanished from the village but not without cursing the village that no one could ever settle down on that land.

DID THE CURSE COME TRUE?

For years a bunch of people tried settling down into Kuldhara, but none of them made it. The people who wanted to make the village their home said they experienced weird sounds, and flickering lights, and felt the presence of someone they couldn't see with their eyes. Some folks insisted on witnessing ghostly apparitions. The curse of Kuldhara had stuck to its word. These are stories told by local dwellers of nearby villages.

WHAT DOES PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY?

According to the discussions with the local people of Kuldhara tourists, there has been a very prominent agreement on the beliefs and existence of ghosts and paranormal activities in Kuldhara. The people were proactive and prompt in their discussion and did not hesitate to share their versions. There is a story in which people believed that the village was badly hit by an earthquake due to which the structures and buildings collapsed and the people decided to move to places that experienced less seismic activity. Many researches and surveys have been done on the village. Some have reported the existence of paranormal activity, whereas some believe the place to be ecologically unfit . However, people are always attracted to stories of mystery, hence often believe the former. Nevertheless, today, the Rajasthan Government has preserved the village as a heritage site, which attracts thousands of visitors who are interested in ghostly supernatural stories.

Today the deserted streets and houses serve as an eerie reminder of a sorrowful past. Each abandoned structure has so many stories to tell to the people passing by. The mystery of the sudden disappearance of the settlement from the village is still unsolved but the supernatural stories have continued to capture the minds of the listeners.
